Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel, which will help to provide valuable information for the subsequent hydrogen embrittlement research of this kind of steel, so as to optimize the processing technology and take more appropriate measures to prevent hydrogen damage.

Design/methodology/approach

The hydrogen diffusion coefficient of 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel was measured by the hydrogen permeation technique of double electrolytic cells. Moreover, the influence of hydrogen traps in the material and experimental temperature on hydrogen diffusion behavior was discussed. The first-principles calculations based on density functional theory were used to study the occupancy of H atoms in the bcc-Fe cell, the diffusion path and the interaction with vacancy defects.

Findings

The results revealed that the logarithm of the hydrogen diffusion coefficient of the material has a linear relationship with the reciprocal of temperature and the activation energy of hydrogen atom diffusion in 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel is 23.47 kJ/mol. H atoms stably exist in the nearly octahedral interstices in the crystal cell with vacancies. In addition, the solution of Cr/Mo alloy atom does not change the lowest energy path of H atom, but increases the diffusion activation energy of hydrogen atom, thus hindering the diffusion of hydrogen atom. Cr/Mo and vacancy have a synergistic effect on inhibiting the diffusion of H atoms in α-Fe.

Originality/value

This article combines experiments with first-principles calculations to explore the diffusion behavior of hydrogen in 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel from the macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, which will help to establish a calculation model with complex defects in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

With excellent mechanic properties and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) resistance, 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel is suitable to make hot-wall hydrogenation reactors. However, longtime exposure to a harsh environment of high-pressure hydrogen at medium temperature in practical application would still induce severe hydrogen uptake and eventually damage the mechanical properties of the steel. The study aims to evaluate the HE resistance of the steel under different tensile strain rates after hydrogen charging and analyze the hydrogen effect from atomic level.

Design/methodology/approach

This research studied the HE properties of 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel by slow strain rate tests. Meanwhile, the effect of hydrogen on the structures and the mechanical properties of the simplified models of the steel was also investigated by first-principle calculations.

Findings

Experimental results showed that after hydrogen pre-charging in this work, hydrogen had little effect on the microstructure of the steel. The elongations and reduction of cross-sectional area of the samples reduced a lot, by contrast, the yield and tensile strengths changed slightly. The 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel was not very susceptible to HE with a maximum embrittlement index of about 20.00%. First principles calculation results showed that after H dissolution, lattice distortion occurred and interstitial H atoms would preferentially occupy the tetrahedral interstitial site in bcc-Fe crystal and increase the stability of the supercells. With the increase of H atoms added into the simplified model, the steel still possessed a good ductility and toughness at a low hydrogen concentration, while the material would become brittle as the concentration of hydrogen continued to increase.

Originality/value

These finds can provide valuable information for subsequent HE studies on this steel.

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to present a new application of pursuit‐based analysis for diagnosing rolling element bearing faults.

Design/methodology/approach

Intelligent diagnosis of rolling element bearing faults in rotating machinery involves the procedure of feature extraction using modern signal processing techniques and artificial intelligence technique‐based fault detection and identification. This paper presents a comparative study of both the basis and matching pursuits when applied to fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings using vibration analysis.

Findings

Fault features were extracted from vibration acceleration signals and subsequently fed to a feed forward neural network (FFNN) for classification. The classification rate and mean square error (MSE) were calculated to evaluate the performance of the intelligent diagnostic procedure. Results from the basis pursuit fault diagnosis procedure were compared with the classification result of a matching pursuit feature‐based diagnostic procedure. The comparison clearly illustrates that basis pursuit feature‐based fault diagnosis is significantly more accurate than matching pursuit feature‐based fault diagnosis in detecting these faults.

Practical implications

Intelligent diagnosis can reduce the reliance on experienced personnel to make expert judgements on the state of the integrity of machines. The proposed method has the potential to be extensively applied in various industrial scenarios, although this application concerned rolling element bearings only. The principles of the application are directly translatable to other parts of complex machinery.

Originality/value

This work presents a novel intelligent diagnosis strategy using pursuit features and feed forward neural networks. The value of the work is to ease the burden of making decisions on the integrity of plant through a manual program in condition monitoring and diagnostics particularly of complex pieces of plant.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explicitly examines how Hofstede's cultural dimensions moderate the relationship between nonmonetary motivation factors and performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Through the simple random sampling technique, the hypotheses were tested with a sample of 604 employees from a mobile telecommunication company operating in both China and Ghana, two countries that represent two same and opposite cultural poles on Hofstede's cultural dimensions.

Findings

The results point that employee motives such as relationship, supervision, challenging work and achievement are moderated by cultural values. Whilst employees with high power distance cultural values are highly motivated by high supervision, those with low individualistic cultural values are highly motivated by high relationship. The results also depict that whilst the interaction effects between supervision and power distance and relationship and individualism on performance were marginal for both China and Ghana samples, the interaction effect of achievement and masculinity as well as challenging work and uncertainty avoidance on performance had great differences due to the different cultural values for the two countries.

Practical implications

This study implies that, as organizations are devising strategies to lower personnel costs in a recessionary period, there is the need to redesign motivation factors that go beyond monetary means and based on the cultural background of an employee in order to improve performance.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies that focused on nonmonetary motives from a cultural management perspective with samples from emerging economies.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to provide a better understanding of the interactions between housing investment and economic growth. In particular, the paper emphasizes the separate effects of private housing investment (PHI) on the aggregate economy using quarterly data in the UK from 1974 to 2015. This is important due to the relatively growing interest around the world, including the UK, in encouraging greater private housing investment as a way of boosting economic growth.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper used the widely accepted and recognized econometric concepts of unit root, Granger causality and co-integration and provides tentative quantitative evidence of the causal and predictive effect of PHI and economic growth.

Findings

The key finding is that the level of investment directed by individual and institution into the private housing sector is key to future development, and will strongly reduce economic performance volatility.

Research limitations/implications

Given that this is a bivariate time series analysis of PHI and economic growth (proxy by gross domestic product), the conclusions of this paper need to treated with caution, as there are other potential variables that might be omitted to make the model more robust so as to reach a more conclusive result.

Originality/value

This study complements existing literature, not only by providing new empirical evidence on the nexus between housing markets and the business cycle but also by being the pioneering attempt at examining the impact of PHI on the economy in the UK.

Abstract

This study contributes to existing scholarship on democratic education by focusing explicitly on the affective dynamics of teaching with and for discussion. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to critically analyze the first author’s efforts to address the role of emotion in democratic dialogue within the context of classroom-based discussions and the work of preparing future social studies educators for their role as discussion facilitators. We found that despite the instructor’s stated goals and her efforts to teach about the constructive role of emotion in learning to communicate across difference, overall, students continued to judge dispassionate and disembodied speech acts as appropriate, while expressions of anger, frustration, or exaspe-ration were judged inappropriate. More specifically, if a female student spoke with anger or frustration during class discussions, her concerns, ideas, and questions tended to be ridiculed, ignored, or dismissed, while the same emotional rule did not apply to male students. If our intent is to facilitate communication across difference, we must actively attend to the ways in which social hierarchies inform discussion by carefully considering how emotional expression and experiences are positioned.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate masculinity in Chinese social media marketing for global luxury fashion brands through two studies.

Design/methodology/approach

Study 1 compares physical characteristics of males in visually oriented US (Instagram) and Chinese (Weibo) social media posts promoting global luxury fashion magazine brands (e.g. Vogue, Cosmopolitan, GQ and Esquire). Study 2 examines the prevalence of and Chinese consumers’ responses (reposts, comments and likes) to different masculinities depicted in luxury fashion brand-sponsored Weibo posts.

Findings

Male portrayals for Chinese audiences feature more characteristics associated with emerging East Asian hybrid masculinities – “Little Fresh Meat” (LFM) and “Old Grilled Meat” (OGM) – than associated with global or regional hegemonic masculinity (i.e. the scholarly Wén and action-oriented Wu). Wén remains common in social media posts for luxury fashion goods, but LFM and OGM engender more consumer responses.

Practical implications

Chinese luxury fashion marketing depicts masculinity more similarly to other East Asian marketing than to Western marketing. Some luxury fashion brands are struggling for acceptance among Chinese youth. Luxury fashion marketers should incorporate hybrid rather than hegemonic masculinities to prompt more favorable responses among Chinese consumers, especially younger female target markets.

Originality/value

Growing female occupational and consumer power and shifting male employment from blue-collar to white-collar jobs have influenced media portrayals of masculinity. Social media marketing for luxury fashion brands demonstrates the prevalence and appeal of hybrid masculinities in China.

Abstract

Purpose

Literature review indicates lack of using the Kano model in organizational behavior domain and managers’ satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to propose a Kano-based model for managers’ satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to examine one of the proposed behaviors in this model, the role of employees’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) as an attractive behavior, has been investigated. The statistical population includes managers of the Isfahan’s financial service industries. After distributing questionnaires, 224 accurate questionnaires have been used for data analysis. In designing the survey questionnaire, the OCB questionnaire developed by Podsakoff et al. (1990) and Bell and Menguc (2002) has been used. For each of the OCB dimensions, some questions have been initially designed; then after collecting data, by using Kano evaluation table, the behavior types have been determined.

Findings

Findings imply that by using the Kano model, five types of behaviors, i.e. must-be, one-dimensional, attractive, indifferent, and reverse can be identified. The findings related to case study also indicate that out of five dimensions of OCB, three dimensions of altruism, sportsmanship, and civic virtue are located in Attractive category; the courtesy dimension is located in must-be category; the conscientiousness dimension is located in one-dimensional category; and in reverse category, no dimension is located. In general, OCB is located in attractive category.

Research limitations/implications

By using the results of this survey, a new classification of employees’ behaviors types can be suggested. The results of this study can help employees in understanding what kind of their behaviors causes managers’ satisfaction.

Originality/value

The results of this study have an important contribution in the literature of the Kano model and OCB.

Abstract

This article reviews research findings related to the “art” of constructing survey questionnaires. It discusses some of the important issues that should be considered in gathering quality data via questionnaires, provides general suggestions for their construction, includes a comprehensive list of important reference sources, and examines some of the survey‐based studies published in Integrated Manufacturing Systems. Constructing a good questionnaire requires a thorough grasp of the intricacies of the topical area and detailed knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the different survey administration modes. In addition, questionnaire construction entails close attention to details about the wording of questions, their instructions, their response choices, and their sequence. Most importantly, the research instrument should be refined based on guidance from repeated pretests. Well‐constructed questionnaires can ensure the consistent meaning of the questions across respondents and can contribute to data quality by decreasing both item and unit nonresponse.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a multidimensional evaluation of brand equity performance incorporating dimensions adopted from the balance scorecard (BSC) approach to business performance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, text mining is used for automatic extraction of valuable information from textual data such as the financial reports of firms. Instead of expert opinions, linguistic scales built upon outcomes of text mining are used as inputs for decision-making. The proposed model combines fuzzy DEMATEL (FDEMATEL), fuzzy ANP (FANP), fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) and fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR) methods for weighting criteria and ranking alternatives.

Findings

Using data from five privatized firms in Turkey, the study’s findings demonstrate that the customer is the most important dimension of brand equity performance evaluation. Cash flow and brand loyalty are identified as the most important criteria in the measurement of brand equity performance.

Practical implications

Findings highlight the importance of firms taking action to increase consumer perceptions, attitudes and behaviors in the privatization processes. For this purpose, privatized firms need to understand the expectations of customers to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty and therefore improve brand equity.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to literature in several important ways. First, by adopting the BSC approach, it proposes a holistic and a multidimensional model for measuring brand equity performance. Second, the study offers a novel methodology using a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making model designed for the fuzzy environment. Third, the study uses the knowledge extraction tool of text mining in the fuzzy decision-making process. Finally, the study evaluates the brand equity performance of privatized firms in an emerging country context.
